CASE STUDY

UK Precision Engineering Company

The customer requested a SPEEDER unit to reduce processing time performing profile milling on parts such as the test article; a large (3m x 0.2 m) Aluminum mould die.

Machine: HEDELIUS C-125 from YMT (max head speed 10,000 RPM)
Cutter: 0.5 mm ball nose cutter (4 mm shank)

Previous (10k RPM):

6 hours and 36 minutes (Feed: 450 mm/min)

Estimated (60k RPM):

1 hour and 32 minutes (Feed 2,475 mm/min)

Actual (60k RPM):

2 hours and 50 minutes (3:40 hrs. saving)

The programmed tool path required multiple Z-axis steps which hindered the axis from achieving the targeted maximum feed, had the job been programmed differently, the team felt a shorter processing time could have been achieved.

The SPEEDER performed reliably, achieving a high quality finish.

Battery life was not an issue, with a full charge, would have supported over 6 hours of continuous cutting. Efficiency would be further improved with a reduced SPEEDER speed and through-spindle coolant.

CASE STUDY

Cutting Trials

Cutting trials were performed on an XYZ Vertical Machining Centre. The BT40+ SPEEDER was fitted to the machine and a series of cuts were performed with different cutting tools to evaluate performance.

The results from the Scanning/Profile milling and Engraving were impressive, allowing the tools to exert the full range of their capability.

The SPEEDER was equally capable of high-speed slot-milling and end-milling, achieving a high-quality finish with the depth and feed of cut tuned to the SPEEDERS consistent torque output.
